Advantages and Disadvantages of Petroleum

Petroleum is one of the important non-renewable sources of energy. We use petroleum for obtaining kerosene, heating oil, diesel, and other important products.

Many of us know about petroleum but do you know the advantages and disadvantages of petroleum?

If you don’t know its pros and cons then, this article is really going to help you. Inside this article, we are going to discuss its benefits and drawbacks. So, without any further delay let’s start the article.

Advantages of Petroleum

  • Stable Source of Energy:

In today’s world, we are talking about renewable sources of energy like wind energy, solar energy, etc. But are these energy sources really gives us stable energy? The answer is “no”. Although we can use these energy sources for different applications, we cannot replace these non-renewable energy sources with petroleum.

Petroleum has its existence since ancient time. And over the years, it has a proven source for giving away us a constant energy supply.

Advantages and disadvantages of petroleum

  • Produces Employment Opportunities

The petroleum industry is providing thousands of jobs all across the world. Most of the jobs that are available today are related to this industry. So, as long as petroleum is there the jobs related to it are there.

  • Less Energy Loss During Transportation

Transportation of energy sources is the most crucial factor in today’s world. Most of the energy sources losses half of their potential during transportation. Now, if you compare petroleum to these sources then, the transportation of it can be carried without this loss.

Petroleum can be transported to tens or even hundreds of miles via pipelines or via tanker ships. So, in the remote area’s petroleum can be easily accessible due to its faster transportation.

  • Large Presence

Petroleum is present all across the world and that is a larger amount. Every reservoir of petroleum has different grades which can be used for many industries.

These grades of petroleum may contain different components in various amounts. Petroleum is also cheaper than the other non-renewable energy sources.

Do you know what happens when a petroleum oil well is no longer economical? The restoration process is carried out in this situation. Due to restoration, new plants are made available in such places.

In the 12 months of renovation time, we can completely change the look of the place containing such well and many useful facilities can be available there.

Now, let us see the other side of the spectrum that means the disadvantages of petroleum:

Disadvantages

  • It is a Non-renewable Source of Energy:

The most important drawback of petroleum is that it is a non-renewable source of energy. That means that it will no longer exist if we use it continuously.

And these can affect our future generations. Can you imagine a life without petroleum? Absolutely not. So, though it is available in the larger amount, we cannot use it entirely.

  • Green House Effect:

Air pollution is increasing day by day. When petroleum sources are burnt then, they emit greenhouse gases. These greenhouse gases are very dangerous to human beings, animals, and birds. Our atmosphere is changing day by day and pollution getting out of control.

If this continues then, the earth will no longer exist. So, the burning of petroleum fuel sources has to be completely restricted. In human beings, we will face a lot of respiratory diseases due to these greenhouse gases.

  • Maintenance

For maintaining petroleum plants, we require a lot of capital. Though setting up is quite affordable but it should be maintained properly.

Petroleum can change the composition inside the oceans due to its mixing with sea water.

So, in this article, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of petroleum. Humans should think innovatively in implementing renewable sources of energy in daily life. Let us know in the comments if you have any queries.
